Nichola Mallon to ask officials to look at road safety at the top of the Rock Road in Derry where young man was killed in road accident last year
Roads minister Nichola Mallon is to ask officials to look at potential road safety measures at the top of Rock Road where a young Derry man lost his life last year.
She said she considers it an important issue and has promised to discuss the junction with her departmental officials.
Foyle MLA Karen Mullan raised the matter with the Minister for Infrastructure at the Stormont Assembly this week.
She said she was concerned about ‘the junction of Northland Road and Rock Road at the Magee campus of Ulster University’.
Ms. Mullan pointed out that ‘there have been several serious collisions and, unfortunately, last year, a young man lost his life.’
She asked for a review of the location with a view to introducing additional protections for road users and pedestrians.
Ms. Mallon replied: “I thank the Member for raising this very important issue. I will commit to discussing the matter with my officials, asking them to provide you with an update on what actions we can take and making sure that that gets to you at the earliest opportunity.”
Ms. Mullan told the ‘Journal’ she was concerned that further injuries or fatalities could occur at the sharp bend on the Northland Road.
“There have been a number of serious collisions at this particular junction, one of which sadly resulted in the death of a driver.
“Given the nature of these incidents where vehicles left the road and crossed the pavements, there is genuine concern that pedestrians could be seriously injured.
“I would urge the Department for Infrastructure to undertake a review of the location with a view of introducing additional protection for road users and pedestrians.”
