Norwegian Air to provide low-cost flights from Belfast to USA

The transatlantic flights are due to start later this year.

Norwegian Air said it intends to provide people in the North with low-cost transatlantic fares for as little as £69 to secondary airports in the New York and Boston areas.

BMI to take on Derry to London route

The flight operator will offer transatlantic flights from Dublin, Shannon and Cork airports.

The Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Air has hinted in the past that return fares to the USA could cost as little as $350.

Five weekly flights will take off from Belfast International Airport while a further 19 weekly flights will operate in the South.

The US airports served are Stewart International, which is less than 90 minutes from New York City, and TF Green, which is 90 minutes from Boston.

Routes will be operated on new Boeing 737 MAX aircraft with a single economy class.

Norwegian CEO Bjorn Kjos said: “With the first ever transatlantic flights from Cork and new services from Dublin and Shannon, we are shaking up transatlantic travel with ground-breaking fares and never before seen routes. “The cost of transatlantic travel has been too high for too long so by connecting Irish cities with smaller US airports, we can offer some truly affordable fares, allowing as many people as possible to fly.”
