Football fans mourning the death of former Derry City F.C. striker, Mark Farren, are using social media to express their grief.

The 33 year-old goal-scoring legend died in the early hours on Wednesday morning; he had been battling an aggressive brain tumour.

Farren’s great love affair with Derry City F.C. started when he joined the club from Monaghan United in 2003.

Prolific, gifted and talented are words best used to describe Farren’s time at the Brandywell and when he beat Liam Coyle’s goal-scoring record with a hat-trick against Mervue United in 2012 he cemented his right to be referred to as a ‘legend’.

“Beautiful fella - gone too soon - R.I.P. Mark - heartbreaking, condolences to your wife family and friends,” said one supporter.

“Your suffering is over now big man - you’re with God now, rest well,” added another fan.

One Derry City F.C. supporter summed Farren up brilliantly when he referred to him as a “fighter” both on and off the football pitch.

“A true Derry City legend and a great professional, a gentlemen, a fighter both on and off the pitch.”

Some fans used the hashtags #RIPMarkFarren and #OnlyOneMarkFarren on Twitter.

“My heart is broken today! God has gained another angel #ripmarkfarren #18 #onemarkfarren,” Tweeted one fan.

“Sad news today about Mark Farren. A Derry City legend and goal machine. Thoughts with his family & friends #ripmarkfarren,” added another supporter.

Derry City supporter and Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle, Raymond McCartney, described Farren as a man with “great courage”.

“It’s very sad hearing the news today that Mark has passed away following a brave battle with illness. Mark had great courage and a tremendous spirit.

“My thoughts and prayers and those of the people of this city are with the Farren family at what must be a very difficult time,” said Mr. McCartney.

Meanwhile, Farren’s former club, Glenavon F.C. will observe a minute’s applause in the tenth minute of their Irish Cup fixture against Glentoran on Sunday.
