In the letter, Arlene Foster and Michelle O’Neill state that they understand that the new measures will be “tough for many” but they appeal to residents to “work together to save lives.”

The letter states: “We know you must be concerned about the high levels of Covid-19 circulating in your area. We’re worried too. That’s why we have taken emergency action to help keep you safe. The rate of transmission in the Derry City and Strabane District Council area is much higher than anywhere else, and has reached a point where we need to intervene.

“The Executive is introducing new measures that will limit people’s movements and reduce the opportunities for Covid-19 to spread from person to person, as it does so easily. These new restrictions will be tough for many of you. But they are necessary to reduce the rate of infection and prevent people from becoming seriously ill. We are already seeing hospital admissions increasing rapidly and we must do everything we can to get on top of the situation. We are asking you to work with us to save lives. As we work together to fight back against Covid-19, there are some vital steps we should all be taking every day. As well as limiting your contacts with other people, please keep washing your hands well and often; keep your distance; wear a face covering and download the StopCovid NI app. If you are displaying any symptoms, self-isolate straight away and book a test. Look after yourself, look after each other and stay safe.”
