People Before Profit launch Foyle campaign

The meeting was chaired by Bernadette McAliskey who also announced she will be director of elections for the party in the lead up to the Assembly poll. Also on the platform were PBP candidate for North Belfast Fiona Ferguson and the party’s TD in Dublin Mid-West Gino Kenny.

The large crowd at the meeting heard Eamonn McCann say that PBP are confident of returning three MLAs to Stormont.

Referring to the civil rights campaign, Mr McCann said: “When people do things for themselves, they achieve things for themselves. Under Derry Corporation one man, the Mayor had the power to allocate housing. We changed that we tens of thousands of people went onto the streets and overthrew that system. That system is being destroyed now, they are destroying the Housing Executive through privitisation and laying off workers,” he said.

Pledging that this was an issue his party would challenge at Stormont, Eamonn McCann also asserted that PBP would be to the forefront on the environment, public transport and the health service.The candidate also said that ‘Troules’ legacy issues were not a matter for negotiation or political deal making and that all victims of the conflict in Northern Ireland were entitled to the truth.
