Anti-immigration protesters force suspension of all Translink bus and rail on Wednesday evening

Anti-immigration protesters have forced the suspension of all Translink bus and rail services on Wednesday evening.

A Translink spokesperson said: “Due to expected protests all Translink bus and rail services will be suspended this evening.

“There will be no bus departures after 5pm and no train services will depart after 6pm.

"There is currently a temporary suspension of some bus services until 1.30pm after which time services will resume."

Protesters gathered in various locations causing significant disruption across Belfast. A Glider bus was set alight on the Newtownards Road which was understood to have been hijacked beforehand. Last night on the Lower Newtownards Road in Belfast hundreds of masked men walked down the street carrying bottles, bricks and masonry. They set bins on fire and shouted "foreigners out". As they walked street to street, they were banging on doors, kicking doors down and breaking windows. Photo by Press Eye.placeholder image

The company said it was working with the PSNI, Trade Unions, and other partners to keep passengers, staff and the public.

“Passengers are advised that services may be subject to alteration or cancellation. Where possible, passengers should travel earlier in the day and allow extra time for their journeys.

“Suspending services is always a last resort, but the safety of our customers and staff remains our top priority. We want to give people as much advance notice as possible so they can plan accordingly,” Translink said.

The company hopes services can be resumed on Thursday.
