James MacCafferty’s life is to be commemorated by the Ulster History Circle with a plaque at his former home at Francis Street in the city.

Originally, it had been planned to unveil the tribute this weekend - the 25th anniversary of Mr MacCafferty’s death - but ongoing Covid restrictions mean the event has had to be postponed.

It’s hoped the plaque can be unveiled at a later date - possibly some time next year.

James McCafferty has long been hailed for his contribution to the musical and cultural life of Derry.

Born in 1915, he was one of the city’s most distinguished musical figures of the 20th century.

A gifted pianist and world class accompanist, he was also an inspirational teacher who fostered a love of music in generations of young singers and musicians.

A hugely sought-after recording artist, broadcaster and MC, he won international acclaim as a choirmaster and his choral arrangements are considered classics.

Synonymous with Feis Doire Colmcille, James MacCafferty also established his own school of music in the 1960s. Pupils included such luminaries as Eurovision Song Contest winner, Dana, Feargal Sharkey, of The Undertones, and the Brennan and Duggan families, of Clannad fame.

James’ son, Pat, believes a plaque outside his former home would be a “fitting” tribute to his father.

“He was by nature a modest man so, I think, he’d be very humbled by such a tribute,” he said.
