Children’s Try-a-Tri in Derry celebrates life of Caina Healey

The Try-a-Tri is held every year in memory of Caina Healey, a Derry teacher and triathlete whose life was tragically cut short while living in Abu Dhabi. The event reflects her love of sport and her encouragement of young people to lead active, healthy lives.

Children from Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir, Long Tower PS, Nazareth House PS, Holy Child PS, Model PS, Rosemount PS, St Thérèse’s PS, Hollybush PS, Steelstown PS, St Patrick’s PS and St Eugene’s PS took part in the event and worked hard in preparation over the last eight weeks.

In the lead-up to the event, Danny Quigley and Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum physical activity instructors visited the schools, delivering training sessions to help children prepare for the challenge.

During the visits, pupils also received a presentation about Caina’s life and her many achievements, giving them a deeper understanding of the story behind this important event.

Ciara McElhinney from the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum said: “We had a brilliant response again this year, with 11 schools taking part, and the enthusiasm from the kids was unbelievable.

“All of the children really gave it their all and supported each other from start to finish. It was just a great day.

“The Try-A-Tri is about building confidence, enjoying being active and having fun. A lot of the kids had never done anything like this before, and to see them take on a swim, a cycle and a run with so much energy and confidence was genuinely inspiring.

“We want to say a massive thank you to every single school that got involved. Their support is what makes this possible - the teachers, children, trainers, parents, and everyone who played a part.

“It’s a really positive way to celebrate Caina’s life and it makes a real difference to local young people. We’re proud to see it continue each year.”

The Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum thanked Caina’s family for their continued support, and Apex Housing Association.
