There are fundraisers and then there are fundraisers with a difference.

Redcastle brothers Darren and Dean Curran are definitely taking part in the latter next month with their ‘scoot’ from Muff to Redcastle - on children’s Barbie scooters, while dressed in nurses’ costumes.

As well as putting plenty of smiles on people’s faces, the big-hearted brothers are also raising funds for the HSE, specifically Letterkenny University Hospital.

They are doing so to pay tribute and say thank you to the hardworking staff of the Donegal hospital for taking care of patients on the frontline during the Covid 19 pandemic, and the pair’s outfit choice on the day will be a nod to local nurses.

The endeavour was to take place on New Year’s Day and all plans were in place, but new Covid restrictions in the south meant it had to be rescheduled until February 7.

Speaking to the Journal, Darren told how he and Dean were ‘scundered’ in the house one day and wanted to find something to do. As Christmas and New Year is usually ‘such a big time’ for them, they started brainstorming to come up with ideas.

“We would normally do the New Year’s Day swim in Redcastle, but that has been cancelled. With Covid, the nurses and staff at the hospital have done such a good job and we wanted to do something for them. We were sitting in the house one day and were bored as we had nothing to be at. There was nothing happening.

“Christmas and New Year would be big times for us and we thought about maybe doing something around then. The idea came up to go from Muff to Redcastle on a scooter and that was that. We thought that it would be funny to go on kids’ scooters and to dress up. We got the sponsor cards made up and it has taken off since.”

Darren told how he and Dean have been delighted with the response so far, with donations rolling in.

The brothers have spent the last couple of weeks updating their followers as they prepared for the event on the Facebook page ‘Darren and Dean’s Scoot for the HSE’, with videos and pictures, including one practice session on a very blustery Culdaff beach.

The route itself was 14km or nine miles, something Darren admitted they didn’t quite know ahead of time. “It’s longer than we thought but sure we’ll get there.”
