The relieved owners of a dog who was missing for a week have thanked his rescuers after he was found trapped behind a hut at Swan’s Park in Buncrana.

‘Bailey’ went missing from his home last Tuesday afternoon and his worried family, the Deeny’s had been constantly searching for him and had shared social media posts and posters seeking information.

But Bailey was nowhere to be found, until Monday afternoon, when a noise was heard coming from behind a hut in the park.

Marty Doc told the Journal how he had been out walking when a man he knew told him how he thought he’d heard a dog, but couldn’t see where it was.

The man told Marty the location and he went to it, jumping on the roof of the hut, so he could ‘get a look down the gap.’

Marty had to pull the bushes away so he could get a better look, and there was poor Bailey looking up at him.

Marty added: “I’m not a big fella and the gap was just big enough to get down and about three metres down.”

A friend, Dean McDermott, came to help and Marty jumped into the gap. He ‘just talked’ to Bailey for a while so that he wouldn’t be frightened and then lifted him up to Dean, who was on the roof. The Deeny family were then located on Facebook and Bailey was taken back home where he belongs.

Colin Deeny told the Journal how all the family is incredibly grateful.

“The dog went missing from home on Tuesday afternoon. We put a facebook message out and so many people shared it. So, thanks to them, especially ‘Lost and Found Dogs Buncrana’ as that is a great page.

“ A few people came back to us and said they saw him at Ned’s Point and Porthaw. That’s an area that we would often walk to from our house with him. So, I guess he is familiar with the route and the area. Our neighbour, Nicky Price, suggested putting posters up in those areas.

“So many people contacted us and said they would keep an eye out for him and we thank them for that. We just kept looking for him. Our boys possibly used more than their fair share of the exercise quota for Covid-19 as we kept walking and walking! However, it was all within our local area as that’s where he was last seen.”

Colin said his boys were ‘very positive’ and ‘didn’t give up’ on Bailey.

“That said, we just couldn’t believe it when we heard he was found in Swan Park. We had been in the Park twice a day but never thought to look behind that hut. We rushed down so excited as fast as we could. We are so grateful to Marty and the lads for rescuing him. It was a tight wee space he was in and quite deep. So, they did really well.

“If only Bailey could talk, he’d have a tale to tell. One thing for sure though - Marty Doc’s brother owns the Buncrana Pet Shop – so Bailey would definitely say he and we owe them a bit of business when this coronavirus is over!”
