Deputy Mayoral year was a 'truly privileged experience' - Niree McMorris

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s former Deputy Mayor, Niree McMorris, said inhabiting the role over the past year has been “a truly privileged experience”.

The DUP alderman, who was replaced by SDLP councillor Catherine McDaid during Monday’s Annual General Meeting, said her time as Deputy Mayor was one of "privilege and profound loss” due to the recent passing of her mother.

Alderman McMorris said she attended a number of events throughout the district, which “highlighted the strength, resilience, and creativity of our communities”, including the première of Teenage Kicks with Ardnashee School, the YMCA Youth Awards Night, and the Action Mental Health photography exhibition.

“These moments have truly captured the spirit and inclusive activity of our city and it's a real honour for me to be here tonight as I come to the end of my term as Deputy Mayor,” she added. “It has been a truly privileged experience to represent our city and district, our communities, and the people who makes this place so special.

“One of the many highlights for myself was actually leading the St Patrick's Day Parade in the city. It's probably unusual for a Unionist to lead that parade, but I did so with pride and can honestly say I was really welcomed by the people of our city in doing so.

“But on a more personal note, this year has brought profound loss with the passing of my much-loved mum.

“I want to take a moment to thank my family, whose love and strength have carried me through that difficult time, and to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who reached out with kindness, support and sympathy.

“To my DUP colleagues, fellow councillors, community partners, and the many organisations I've had the pleasure of working with, thank you for your commitment to making a positive impact, to the people of our city and district, thank you for your warmth, your kindness, and for the welcome you have shown me at every event.

“I want to thank you, Mayor, you have been a pleasure to work alongside.

“Finally, I want to say what a privilege and honour it has been to serve in this role. I will carry the experiences, connections, and memories from this year with me, and they will continue to inspire me in my work ahead.”
