Derry conference to confront Gaza complicity

A major conference looking at Ireland’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Gaza is being hosted by the Bloody Sunday Trust to mark International Day of Solidarity for Palestine.

Chaired by author Fintan Drury, and with a panel of experts and activists, the conference will ‘examine the complicity of Ireland’s government, key institutions and corporations in the genocide, and the repercussions they could face when this is eventually examined in an international court’, the organisers said.

‘Confronting Complicity: Institutional Failure in the Face of Genocide’ will take place in Destined’s North West Learning Disability Centre between 1pm and 4pm on Saturday, November 28.

Chairperson of the Bloody Sunday Trust, Tony Doherty, said: “It is concentrated and co-ordinated action that prevents business-as-usual for the apartheid, genocidal state.

"And it will be through collective solidarity campaigns mobilising protest groups, civil society organisations, trade unions and local authorities that we remove Israel's impunity."

The conference is supported by Rise for Palestine, who said: “Rise for Palestine Derry welcomes this opportunity to engage and collaborate with the Bloody Sunday Trust and other prominent campaigns and activists from across the Island of Ireland.

“For too long the Irish government has only paid lip service to its ‘support’ for Palestine, failing to properly hold Israel accountable for the genocide in Gaza and the apartheid regime imposed upon Palestinians. It’s just cosmetic actions and empty words."

Representatives from key campaign groups will present papers at the conference. These include Micheál Madden, from Madden & Finucane Solicitors, Nollaig Ní Bhrollaigh from the Drop Allianz Campaign and Cairde Palestine.

Drawing on the experiences of activists working across key campaigns against complicity, the conference will provide an opportunity to review progress, highlight actions to date, share lessons learned, and develop further ways to challenge corporate complicity and bring about accountability.

The conference, the organisers day, will be invaluable for those challenging Ireland’s role in the genocide and for those campaigning for an end to the genocide, for Palestine’s right to self- determination, for human rights, and for international law and social justice.
