First Minister, Michelle O’Neill described the green light as “a landmark day for the city of Derry”.

"Today’s decision is about the future, one built on regeneration, opportunity and community pride. This investment will deliver much needed modern facilities, support local jobs, and create a shared space that reflects the resilience and spirit of the city.”

Meanwhile it emerged Sainsbury’s proposed new £21m store in the Waterside will support 200 new jobs as an application was submitted for the Homebase unit at Crescent Link. In a separate development, 50 new jobs were created in Derry with £3m opening of Lynch’s EUROSPAR Caw.

In further major developments, the new high-tech learning spaces for Ulster University computing students along Derry’s riverfront opened, with Economy Minister Dr. Caoimhe Archibald later speaking of how she was prioritising attracting inward investment to the region while meeting major players in the U.S.

Meanwhile there was widespread condemnation when a Sudanese family were subjected to a racist attack in the Fountain. In separate developments, the stabbing of a police officer was also roundly condemned and residents in Skeoge were evacuated on two occasions due to a reports of devices left in the area.

In entertainment news, throughout the month many people were glued to the TV each night as the city rallied behind popular Derry Big Brother finalist and TikToker Jenny Baird. Jenny finished third and was given a hero’s welcome upon her return and the honour of switching on the Christmas Lights with the Mayor and Santa Claus himself.
