Rev. Michael Canny believes practical measures could be put in place to allow people to return to worship safely as the Covid-19 lockdown continues.

He was speaking after NI Environment Minister Edwin Poots suggested there could be a phased reopening of some churches that can adhere to social distancing.

Rev. Canny said: “Given that we will have to live with this virus for many months and, possibly, a couple of years, I think it is necessary that we look at different ways that we can tiptoe our way into what may well become the new normal.

“Many older people who are very aware of their vulnerability have been confined to their homes for almost seven weeks now. These people are not physically able to go for a walk in a park but might be able to come by car to a church for a short visit.

“For some of these people, sitting in solitary prayer for a short period of time will give them comfort and a gentle easing into a new way of living.

“Social distancing and observing guidelines should not be an issue; I trust this group of people to look after themselves and others.”

In response to Mr Poots’ suggestion, Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon said that ministers debating lifting lockdown measures in public was “not useful”.

She said: “My preference is to discuss these things at Executive, be led by the evidence and medical advice, and come to an agreed position and communicate that very clearly through to the public.”

Churches and places of workship across NI have been closed since the end of March.
