Fond tributes to Creggan stalwart Eamon McKeever as he rings till for the last time upon retirement
Fond tributes have been paid to Eamon McKeever after he rang the till for the last time in the shop he ran in the heart of Creggan for decades.
There were emotional scenes as the local community came out to show their appreciation of the long-standing proprietor of McKeever’s of Central Drive on January 28.
Local Sinn Councillor Emma McGinley said: "Enjoy your well earned retirement Eamonn, and go raibh míle maith agaibh to you, your family and your staff all through the years for your service for the people of Creggan.
"The large crowd that turned out to see you off was just class - that's what our Creggan community is all about.”

Further tributes were paid by local football club Trojans.
"McKeever’s shop with Eamon, Tony and family have been in the Creggan community for almost 70 years– a place where everyone was welcomed with a smile, a bit of craic, and a helping hand whenever it was needed.
"For so many of us, calling into McKeever’s was part of daily life, and his presence has always been a steady and friendly constant in our community.
“On behalf of everyone at Trojans YCG, we want to thank Eamon for his years of service, kindness, and dedication to the people of Creggan. He has supported our young people, our families, and our community in ways that will never be forgotten,” the club said.

Holy Child Primary School said: “Eamon hands over the keys to his local McKeever’s shop, a much-loved family business that has served the community for many years. His presence, kindness, and constant support will be deeply missed, and the Creggan Shops area will not be quite the same without him.
"We wish Eamon every happiness in his retirement and hope he enjoys many healthy, happy years ahead.”
And local MLA Mark H Durkan said: “Fantastic to see the fond farewell to Eamon McKeever as he locks up his shop on Central Drive for the last time.
“Thank you to the McKeever’s for the service, the smiles and even the slagging they've given to the people of Creggan over so many years.
“A shop truly at the heart of the community and in the hearts of the community. Wishing Eamon all the best in the future.”
