The Together We Care, Staff Challenge will see the doctors, nurses, chefs, housekeepers, fundraisers and administration staff walk, run, hop, skip and dance around the beautiful grounds surrounding the Hospice for a continuous 12 hour period.

Donall Henderson, CEO Foyle Hospice said: “During a time where our traditional fund-raising events have been cancelled or postponed, we needed to get creative with our fundraising efforts. We wanted to get behind our community and our Hospice staff decided to offer their time to raise funds when community fundraising is limited.

“We have beautiful grounds which surrounds the Hospice, which will allow us to host a fundraising event with staff only, while adhering to government guidelines. We continue to offer care to the most vulnerable people in our community and your support is greatly appreciated. We are hoping to continue with fundraising events planned over the summer and in the Autumn that will allow our community to get involved, but for now this event will allow the staff to contribute to fundraising when our community is limited.”

The staff challenge will begin at 8am on Saturday, June 13 and end at 8pm. Staff members have been allocated time slots of 30 minute windows to complete their challenge and only a few staff members will walk at a time.

Director of Income Generation and Communications, Sheila Duffy said: “Foyle Hospice is required to raise approximately £2.2million from the local community every year and Covid-19 has made our traditional fundraising methods impossible. We are unable to host an event with the public, so we are hugging the Hospice and walking the circle of its grounds in bid to come together for the community.

“We are hoping to make this an annual event and hopefully next year our community can join our staff in the Together We Care challenge. For now, it will remain strictly staff only at the event due to ongoing restrictions.”

It costs approximately £5,000 per day to keep the Foyle Hospice inpatient unit open and the staff members have made this their target.

The staff will be walking for a day to provide a day of care.
