Most of us try to avoid coming into contact with the paranormal, but a brave Derry couple are actively seeking it out and unveiling the results online.

Nikki Dunne and her wife Kim Quigley have created the Youtube channel and Facebook page ‘Nikki and Kim’s Haunted Adventures,’ which they launched during lockdown.

Over the past months, the couple, sometimes joined by some friends, have visited some of the most talked about local ‘haunts’ to find out if the rumours of spirits, ghosts and things that go bump in the night are true or tales. They have filmed the results and the videos have already been viewed by thousands of people.

The couple vowed that nothing would be faked and they’d debunk what they could, but have experienced some unusual activity and unnerving moments....

Speaking to the Journal, Nikki, a self-confessed ‘scaredy cat,’ never expected she would be seeking out the paranormal.“If you’d have asked me a couple of months ago if I’d do something like this, I would have told you no. Before I met Kim, I never would have watched horror films but she introduced me to them and we now have a huge interest in them.

“During lockdown, we fell down a rabbit hole with Youtube videos investigating the paranormal and it was mainly people based in America who were doing it.

“We were fairly sceptical and thought some of it must be faked. But, we were talking about how we live in an area that has so much history and paranormal history and thought we could totally do videos here that looked into all this.”

For their first video, the couple, who have been together for seven years, visited Boom Hall and videoed the experience.

“It was really spooky and we were terrified. It’s one of the most talked about places in Derry in relation to things happening. We stayed for about two hours. It was night, pitch black and was just really creepy.”

Nikki and Kim use an app called Spirit Box on their phone, which claims to make it easier for spirits to communicate.

“We were a bit sceptical of it, as it’s an app. But we asked it how many people are there and it clearly said four - we were with two friends - and you can hear it in the video. It’s also always saying Kim’s name and mine a few times, We’ve also tested it by not mentioning at all the name of the friends we were with and it has said them.”

The video of Boom Hall has had over 1,800 views and there are almost 17,000 views across their Youtube channel.

They have also visited Waterside Theatre, where Nikki works and has had ‘a few unusual experiences in.’

“We intended to stay overnight but only stayed about four hours. We were so scared. I also realised I have to work here, so I didn’t want to be too scared going back!”

They also visited Tully Castle in Fermanagh and took pictures. In one of the pictures, which can be seen on Facebook, many have said they can see an unusual figure. Nikki told how, when they post videos, others then tell of their experiences in that location.

Nikki said the videos are comical as well as creepy. “They are funny as well, as we’re just so scared and you can see that. But, we’ve vowed that nothing will be faked, so whatever you’re watching and seeing is what is happening.”

The couple have a ‘long list’ of locations they want to visit.

“We’re dying to get to the old Workhouse Museum, Prehen House and the Convent on Pump Street. We’re delighted with the amount of people watching and commenting on the video in the last couple of months. I never would have imagined people would watch me and Kim, battering about in the dark, talking to ghosts!”

Join them (if you dare) on Nikki and Kim’s Haunted Adventures on Facebook and YouTube.
