Man was ‘waiting for UFO to land in garden’ - 15 UFO sightings reported to police with spike since COVID-19 pandemic began

The most recent sighting of strange lights in the sky in Derry was on August 5, 2019, when a man phoned police and said he was ‘waiting for a UFO to land in his garden’ in an area between Eglinton and Tamnaherin.

According to records released by the PSNI no further details were provided.

On August 13, 2016, another call was received from a member of the public in Derry who claimed they saw a ‘UFO metallic spinning disk flying in the sky above a building on the Strand Road.’ The caller then clarified that it was an aeroplane and no further action was taken.

There was a large increase in the number of sightings last year with six in total since the coronavirus pandemic began although none of these were in Derry.

The most recent report was from a man in west Belfast who on September 26, 2020, phoned police and said he had seen ‘six UFOs flying in the sky over his house.’ The PSNI recorded the call for information.

On August 28, 2020, another member of the public in Belfast reported three UFOs flying over the city. This too was recorded. And on May 12, 2020, police came across a ‘half-naked man claiming to have been delivered by UFOs and wanting to jump into the water at Bangor marina’.

On March 19, 2020, again in Bangor a ‘flying object’ that appeared to have solar panels was spotted. Police attended but found no trace of the UFO and the caller suggested they believed it may have just been a drone.

On March 15, 2020, a concerned member of the public reported a ‘UFO with many flashing lights hovering for 30 minutes making no noise’ at Dunmurry.

Between 2016 and 2020 there were several other reports of bright and flashing lights in the sky, mostly made by people living in the Greater Belfast area.
