However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, only members of the late deputy First Minister’s family took part.

The Chieftain’s Walk, which usually attracts thousands of participants, was due to take place in March but was postponed because of the coronavirus crisis.

Sunday’s walk was the third annual event to take place since Mr McGuinness’ death from a rare medical condition in 2017.

Speaking ahead of the walk, Mr McGuinness’ widow, Bernie, explained why only she and her four children would be taking part in this year’s event.

“Over the last number of years, many thousands have taken part in the Chieftain’s Walk for my husband, Martin, so we know how disappointing it is that things have to be very different this year, but protecting public health has to be our priority,” she said.

Mrs McGuinness said that, instead of people gathering in their thousands, she and her children would walk the route of their behalf.

“But you can still play your part by continuing to sign up or donate,” she added.

“All those who do so will still receive a special memento of the day as well as raising funds for the peace foundation set up to promote Martin’s legacy.

“Please continue to support this wonderful event.”

Supporters of the event had been urged to take part in their own 5K walk and post a photo online with the hashtag #RememberTheChieftain

A spokesperson for the Martin McGuinness Peace Foundation said the event could still be supported virtually.

“We again thank the public for their ongoing support and we hope to see you all back in your thousands next year as we, once again, gather in person to remember our Chieftain,” he said.
