Northburg fairies delighting young and old alike in Greencastle

The ‘Northburg Fairies,’ recently took up residence in the village and are living along the shore path, which edges along the waters of Lough Foyle.

Local rumour has it that the fairies returned to Greencastle after over 1000 years away. They found a harmonious community that looked after the area and one another. The fairies liked it so much, they decided to return to their former home once again.

However, as they had not packed all their things, the people of Greencastle were asked to help create new homes for the fairies living along the Shore Path. And the results have been spectacular.

Screams of excitement and delight could be heard from every direction when the Journal visited the popular attraction last weekend, as children - and some of those not so young - found glittery fairy doors,and fairy houses made from all manner of items, including shells, trees, rocks and ice pop sticks, as well as numerous other fabulous pieces that make up the fairy villages.

These included tiny postboxes, picnic boxes and play parks, all nestled among the rocks and along the path. You can even see the fairies’ washing hanging on the line and there’s a special bucket where children can leave their dummies for the fairies to keep. You can also make a wish to the fairies by placing your hands on a special tree trunk. While the fairies sleep through the day and sprinkle their magic and fairy dust at night, they have left many mantras, poems, songs and inspiring quotes along the way, with a strong emphasis on kindness and loving the environment.

The walk itself is a beautiful one, with panoramic views and a great Greencastle welcome. A magical place for young and old, because, as the Northburg fairies say, you’re never too old for fairytales.
