Over a dozen beaches in Donegal and Derry receive Blue Flag status for 2026
Over a dozen beaches across Donegal and Derry have been awarded Blue Flag status this year.
Donegal was awarded 11 Blue Flag beaches and one Blue Flag marina for 2026.
The seaside spots awarded Blue Flag status for 2026 were Culdaff, Stroove, Rathmullan Marina, Bundoran, Rossnowlagh, Murvagh, Fintra, Narin/Portnoo, Carrickfinn, Killahoey, Marblehill and Downings.
In addition, Dooey, Magheroarty, Drumnatinney, Ballyheirnan and Port Arthur have each received Green Coast Awards for 2026, further highlighting the quality and appeal of Donegal’s coastal offering.

While Portsalon (Ballymastocker) beach was not included in this year’s Blue Flag awards, Donegal County Council said it is committed to supporting a strong application for the return of its Blue Flag status for the 2027 bathing season.
On the other side of the border Benone Beach, Castlerock Beach and Downhill Beach all received Blue flag status.
Sinn Féin MLA Caoimhe Archibald said: "On the north coast we are blessed with our natural heritage and stunning coastline. It is fantastic to have this recognised with the awarding of the blue flags.
"The blue flag status is an endorsement for the local area. It is good news for the tourism industry and will boost the profile of the north coast.
"Those who are responsible for the upkeep of the beaches must be commended and congratulated for these achievements."
DCC confirmed that lifeguards are in place on all Blue Flag beaches and will also be deployed at Rathmullan and Portsalon beaches for the bathing season from June 1 to September 15.
All Blue Flag beaches in Donegal are currently wheelchair accessible, and beach wheelchairs are available for public use at each location.
