He was also a founding member of Derry Credit Union and was, for many years, a director of the organisation.

He retired from the credit union in 2015 - after 44 years’ service.

Among those paying tribute to Mr McAnee (pictured) was former Mayor of Derry, Pat Ramsey, who described him as an “ambassador for both Derry and Ireland.”

This is a view shared by Sinn Fein’s Karen Mullan who described Mr McAnee as a person “dedicated to this city and its people.”

She added: “For many years, Seamus was at the heart of community activity in Derry through his involvement with the Credit Union, the City of Derry Swimming Club and other community initiatives. He will be sadly missed by many. My thoughts are with his loved ones, family and friends at this sad time.”

Seamus is survived by his children Caroline, Jacqueline, Linda, John and Jim. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret, and baby daughter, Mary.

Due to ongoing Coronavirus restrictions, his wake and funeral are strictly private.
