Second serious collision on Glenshane Road in Derry reported

A second serious road traffic collision has been reported on the Glenshane Road in Derry less than 12 after another collision which claimed the life of a motorcyclist.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “The Glenshane Road in Derry/Londonderry has been closed due to a serious road traffic collision at 4.25pm this afternoon (Monday, February 22nd).

Diversions are in place for Belfast bound traffic at the Glenshane Road junction with the Tirbracken Road while Londonderry bound traffic is being diverted at the Foreglen Road junction with Baranailt Road.

Motorists should seek alternative routes.”

Earlier today an appeal for witnesses was issued after a man was tragically killed in a road traffic collision in Derry this morning.

Police appealed for information following the fatal crash which occurred near the main entrance to the Altnagelvin Hospital site.

It is understood the motorcyclist lived locally.

The road remained closed this evening as an examination of the scene where the tragic events unfolded was conducted.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed this afternoon: “A man in his 30s died after his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle on the Glenshane Road shortly after 5.30am [Monday, February 22].

“The road has been closed in both directions at Altnagelvin Hospital and will remain closed for some time. Local diversions are in place and motorists are advised to seek an alternative route where possible.

“Officers are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have dashcam footage or any other information to contact police on 101 quoting reference 211 of 22/02/21.
