The Derry Skate Park Committee submitted an 11 page proposal to Derry City and Strabane District Council last week.

They are to meet with the Mayor, Councillor Brian Tierney, to discuss ways to take the project forward.

Ronan McElroy from the committee said the proposal has received positive feedback from local political representatives and community groups.

The proposal outlines the history of the campaign for a skate park, which began in 1996.

It refers to other council owned skate parks in the North, with two in Belfast and one in both Carrickfergus and Bangor.

The proposal says that Derry has “never had so many people interested in skating, roller-blading, scooting and BMXing.

“It is a rapidly expanding culture of diversity and a healthy alternative to games consoles, mobile phones, inactivity and substance abuse.”

The proposal adds that this group “do not enjoy being labelled as nuisances when using public furniture to perform their sport; they simply do not have a dedicated recreational facility in which to do it.”

Ronan said he is ‘hopeful’ but a skate park has been promised in the past with no end result. He added: “We just have to keep pushing and pushing.”
