"These young men have represented themselves, their school, and their community with distinction. They are true ambassadors for Derry and Strabane, and we wish them all the best for their future sporting careers,” he concluded.

Previously St Columb’s College Principal, Mrs Caroline McLaughlin said: “History was again made by St Columb’s College on the soccer pitch when our Year 9 squad travelled to Barcelona to participate in the Schools’ World Cup Tournament. We are very proud to say that we are the first school in N.I. to do so.

“The squad returned as impressive Bronze Winners, having finished in 3rd Place in the World. They had the 2nd highest goal count per game in the under-13 boys’ section. Added to this, our very own Tom Prigent was player of the Match in three of the games and Lucas Doherty in one.

“Every single boy who travelled and played did us proud, representing our College with enthusiasm, energy and pride.

“Participation at this tournament and having St Columb’s College and Derry on the world stage like this has created such a buzz. It has uplifted, bonded, and created such positivity among our boys, our College and our City.

“Well done to all involved!”
