Transport plan crucial for A2 Buncrana Road may be ready for consultation in late 2026

The long-awaited North West Transport Plan 2035 may be ready to be put out to public consultation by the end of this year, roads minister Liz Kimmins has said.

The NWTP will cover local transport issues, including active travel, public transport, the local road network and parking, and set departmental investment decisions out to 2035, DfI has said.

Three years ago DfI paused the development of the A2 Buncrana Road scheme until the NWTP was well enough developed to ‘allow a high quality design to be advanced that fully aligns with the holistic multi modal transport approach for the city, including any linkages to City deal projects’.

Foyle MLA Ciara Ferguson has now asked the Minister for Infrastructure for an update on any work being undertaken by her Department on the NWTP, including a timeline for completion.

“Officials are working closely with Derry City and Strabane District Council and other stakeholders to develop the NWTP.

“My officials, supported by design team partners, are currently at a technical stage in the plan process, identifying and assessing a long list of transport options for the plan area, in line with my agreed vision and objectives,” the roads minister stated.

Ms. Kimmins said her Department hoped to be in a position to consult on the NWTP by the end of this year.

“While the Plan remains at an early stage, engagement with Council officials will continue as it progresses. Delivery of the Plan is dependent on the timetable for the Council’s Local Development Plan, and delivery to public consultation is expected to be late 2026,” she stated.
