"A man of great bearing, natural grace and constant warm charm (except apparently when playing as a strong centre-half). Condolences to his loving and proud family," he stated.

Mr. Curran was born in the Lecky Road and joined Derry City as a 14-year-old in 1944. He was the only Derry-born player on the 1954 Irish Cup winning team.

He was inducted into Derry City's Hall of Fame in February 2019 and was the club's first recipient of its Lifetime Volunteer Award.

Derry City FC said the club was deeply saddened to learn of Willie’s passing and described him as a ‘genuine club legend.’

“Such was his passion for the club that Willie was unanimously selected by the club Board to receive Derry City’s first-ever Lifetime Volunteer Award. At a City home game in 2018, a humble Willie Curran was surrounded by his family on the Brandywell pitch as the presentation was made by Liam Coyle.

“Following the passing of his late wife Elizene and sons Charlie and Declan, Willie is survived by sons John and Liam and daughters Eleanor, Orlaith, Elizabeth, Mairead and Maura.

“Willie Curran was an absolute stalwart of our football club but leaves behind a legacy that will live on. He will be very sorely missed by everyone at Derry City. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace,” the club stated.

On the occasion of his 90th birthday last May, Derry City manager Declan Devine said: "You've been an unbelievable servant to the club in terms of your playing, captaining the club, the support and help you give in your fundraising departments.
