Upset after 'incorrect' information given on Buncrana Community Hospital
There has been a ‘disappointing development’ in the campaign for Buncrana Community Hospital after it was confirmed that beds are set to be reduced.
At a meeting last week, the HSE told local representatives that 41 beds would be delivered at the facility following long-awaited redevelopment, which is due to begin in September.
However, on Tuesday, they were told this was ‘incorrect’ and the ‘actual number will be 36 beds.’
Donegal County Councillor Jack Murray said this was a ‘real blow, particularly given the current demand for beds and the fact that we have an ageing population, meaning that demand is only going to increase.’

“I was advised that the HSE will explore other on-site opportunities to expand capacity and bring in additional services.
“A letter is due to issue later to all public representatives who attended the meeting.
The Sinn Fein Councillor added: “It is imperative now that public representatives from all parties continue to stand united with the local community and demand that our people get the healthcare they deserve.”
Fianna Fail Councillor Fionan Bradley said he received a phone call this morning confirming a ‘mistake’ was made in relation to bed capacity when works are finished.
He said the HSE informed him they had ‘conducted a site inspection yesterday with a view to beginning to plan for further expansion to increase capacity’ .
Colr Bradley said that elected representatives are to be informed of a meeting, capacity and moving the project forward.
He added: “It's beyond belief that a mistake like this could have been made re capacity. I made it clear in no uncertain terms that this had to be the end of the gaffes, mistakes and delays and that Buncrana now had to be all of their priorities.”
100% Redress Party Councillor Joy Beard also expressed her disappointment and said: “ This does not give hope moving forward when information provided a week ago was wrong after seven years waiting!”
The Inish Theatre Group, who also attended the recent meeting with family campaign members and local representatives, described the update as ‘disheartening’.
They said: “This confusion stems from figures presented based on the emergency situation during COVID-19 — and it is simply not good enough.”
A spokesperson said that people ‘deserve honesty not shifting numbers and mixed messages.’
