Brandon Lewis condemns Martina Anderson in House of Commons

Derry MLA Martina Anderson has been condemned by the Secretary of State Brandon Lewis in Westminster over a tweet about victims last week.

Ms. Anderson has apologised unreservedly for the social media post in which she stated that the £800m victims pension was mainly for ‘those who fought Britain’s dirty war’.

The matter was raised again in the British House of Commons on Wednesday by Mark Fletcher, the Conservative MP for Bolshover who said: "Last week Sinn Féin's Martina Anderson described troubles victims applying for the victims payments scheme as 'mainly those who fought Britain's dirty war' or were 'involved in collusion'."

Mr. Fletcher asked the Secretary of State if he would join him in "condemning these grossly insulting comments to the victims many of whom live in my constituency."

Mr. Lewis replied: "Simple answer is yes. I think, particularly people having waited so long to see an insensitive, ill-advised , inappropriate comment like that was the last thing anybody needed .

"It should never have been made in the first place. We should all be condemning that and moving forward to make sure victims get what they have morally and now legally waited far too long for."
