Derek Hussey returning to Derry City and Strabane District Council from Sunday

Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) veteran Derek Hussey will return to Derry City and Strabane District Council from Sunday after a 15 month disqualification over a drink-driving conviction.

Virginia McVea, the Chief Electoral Officer, gave notice this week that Mr. Hussey had been returned to fill the vacancy on Derry City and Strabane District Council with effect from November 1, 2020.

He will fill the seat of fellow UUP representative Andy McKane who is stepping aside as a representative for the Derg District Electoral Area (DEA).

Mr. Hussey was disqualified by the Local Government Commissioner for Standards for breaching the Local Government Code of Conduct for Councillors following a drink driving conviction in March 2016.

The former deputy mayor was disqualified as a councillor in July of last year.
