Eastwood calls on Executive to urgently address ‘severe social and emergency housing crisis in Derry’

Colum Eastwood has called on the Executive to urgently address what he has called the ‘severe social and emergency housing crisis affecting Derry’.

He said: "With 5,951 people across our council area on the housing list, Derry is experiencing a terrible social and emergency housing shortage.

"The lack of adequate housing is taking a severe toll on people's physical and mental health, with many families living in substandard conditions or suffering homelessness.

"People contact me daily about their housing status; many have already languished on the waiting list for years, and some urgently need emergency accommodation.”

The SDLP MP said many people are increasingly concerned about the safety and suitability of emergency accommodation on offer and ‘are afraid to accept it’.

"This is unacceptable and degrading,” he said.

Mr. Eastwood said the Council’s new Local Development Plan must go further than previous ones in addressing community housing needs and that the Council must ensure land zoned for housing is available for social housing.
