Hutton calls for new initiative to prevent drink spiking

A motion calling for new measures to prevent drink spiking and raise awareness at licensed premises, events and festivals is to be brought before Derry and Strabane Council.

Sinn Féin Councillor Aisling Hutton will bring the motion to the monthly meeting of DC&SDC on Wednesday.

She said the council should explore good practice across the licensed trade and at events, alongside existing measures such as staff training, security arrangements and the ‘Ask for Angela’ initiative.

“There are serious concerns around drink spiking and its impact on people’s safety and confidence when socialising, particularly among young women and girls.

“I am calling on the Council to work with local licensed premises, event promoters, the police, Ulster University Magee, representative bodies and other relevant stakeholders to develop a local initiative promoting protective drink covers and anti-spiking bottle stoppers, where appropriate,” said Colr. Hutton.

She said everyone should be able to enjoy a night out without fear and preventative measures can help create a safer night-time economy.
