New Derry SDLP councillor Sean Mooney honoured to represent Waterside

Sean Mooney has said it's an honour to have been co-opted to sit on Derry City and Strabane District Council as an SDLP Waterside area councillor.

Colr. Mooney replaces Sinead McLaughlin who recently replaced party leader Colum Eastwood as one of the SDLP's MLAs for Foyle.

“It’s a great honour to be taking up the role of SDLP Cllr for the Waterside. I’m looking forward to delivering on the needs of local people with our MP Colum Eastwood, our MLAs Sinead MlcLaughlin and Mark H Durkan and my council colleagues.

“People in Derry deserve delivery. It’s time that politics and politicians worked for them. I’ll be working hard with our entire team to deliver more for the people we represent," said Colr. Mooney.

Speaking after a selection convention in the city on Sunday evening, Mr. Eastwood said: “The SDLP’s team in Derry is continuing to grow and I’m delighted that Sean will be our new councillor for the Waterside.

“Sean has great connections with the local community as an athletics coach and a member of the Board of Governors at Long Tower Primary School. I know that he will put his talents as a former solicitor to good use as an advocate for people across our city on the council.

“The SDLP is focused on growing in Derry and attracting new talented people to our team. Sean’s selection is a signal of our ambition for the city."
