Provisional date set for Manus Deery inquest

A provisional date for a fresh inquest into the killing of Manus Deery was set yesterday at Laganside Court in Belfast.

Manus Deery was 15-years-old when he was shot dead by the British Army in the Bogside on May 19th, 1972. At Monday’s hearing Lord Justice Coulson set a provisional date for the inquest to begin of October 17th, 2016.

When finally established, it is anticipated that the inquest will last two weeks and will be heard at Derry Courthouse. Solcitor Richard Campbell of Quigley, Grant & Kyle law firm said that the development was “absolutely fantastic” for the Deery family.

“I am absolutely estatic that there is finally light at the tunnel in this case.”

In recent weeks fresh tests to establish the line of fire rom the city walls into the area of the Bogside where the teenage victim was struck were carried out.

Controversy has surrounded whether or not the soldier who fired the fatal round had a scope mounted on his rifle or if a free standing site was used.
