Refugees to speak at Bloody Sunday event

Refugees from Iraq and Kosova and a woman deceived into a relationship with an undercover policeman will be among the guest speakers at this year's Bloody Sunday commemoration events.

The Bloody Sunday March Committee programme includes ‘Refugee’ on Wed Jan 27 at the Nerve Centre at 7.30pm, with Aza Ali Ahmad from Mosul and Agim Kryeziu from Kosova.

Journalist Chris Moore will detail the Kincora scandal during ‘The State We’re In’ on Thurs 28 at 7.30pm in the Nerve Centre, along with Geraldine Dunne from the Dublin Southside Travellers Action Group, speaking about the community’s experience in the wake of the recent Carrickmines tragedy.

Donal O’Kelly will deliver the northern premier of his play ‘Hairy Jaysus’ on Fri 29 at 8pm in the Playhouse (£8/ £6) which centres on pacifist Frank Sheehy-Skeffington, who was shot dead at Portobello Barracks in April 1916.

On Saturday 30 in ‘The Whole Truth’ at 12pm in Pilot’s Row , Shauna Moreland will talk about Stakeknife and the murder of her mother, while Janet Donnelly will speak about the exhumation of her father Joseph Murphy’s body in pursuit of new evidence around the Ballymurphy massacre.

Also on Saturday at 2.30pm in the same venue, there will be a panel discussion entitled ‘Out of the Shadows’, during which Helen Steel will talk about her experience as one of seven women who recently sued English police after being deceived into relationships with undercover policemen infiltrating environmental and social justice movements. Dublin based TD Clare Daly will also speak about her recent arrest by the Garda.

Also on Saturday at 7.30pm the Nerve Centre will screen the Irish premiere of ‘The Hard Stop’ about the killing of Mark Duggan in 2011, which sparked the riots in England. The director and two of Mark’s friends will be attending.
