The appearance of the imitation firearms provoked the ire of unionists at the time.

Their display was described as a “glorification of terrorism”.

Concerns were also raised around the provenance of the replica weapons..

One angry citizen went so far as to launch a Freedom of Information (FoI) request in the wake of the incident, inquiring of the police, what steps had “been taken by PSNI to locate and validate the status of the displayed weaponry”.

The PSNI have now responded to the query confirming the replicas were validated by the force.

“The PSNI were in contact with the organiser during the above time frame (September 30, 2017 until December 7, 2017) and despite it not being a legal requirement, checks of the replica weapons were conducted,” the PSNI said.

“Please note these checks were outside of this requested time frame. “ said the police force in response to the FoI request.
