'˜Ridiculous' journey for driving licence

Speaking at the Inishowen Municipal District meeting, Councillor Bernard McGuinness raised concerns over the issue and said he has long called for a resolution, but “nothing has happened.” Up until 2013, licences were issued from Carndonagh Public Service Centre, but a new system saw it moved to Letterkenny. It was stated that drivers would not live more than 50km from a centre but this was not the case for many in Inishowen.

Councillor McGuinness asked if the Council had corresponded with the National Driver Licence Service on the issue and suggested they invite a representative to meet with Inishowen councillors. He said: “This is a very serious problem, particularly for elderly people. To have to go to Letterkenny to get a driving licence is ridiculous.”

Councillor Nicholas Crossan also pointed out how motorists have to travel to the centre in person, as the specific photo needed for the licence can only be taken there.Councillor Albert Doherty called for the service to be located in Carndonagh again.He said many people had to travel 100 miles or more, return, which was “very unfair.” Colr Rena Donaghey also supported Councillor McGuinness’ view. She said she was told the company had the tender in Letterkenny for five years.
