Snapper Dessie delighted with national accolade

Limavady man Dessie Loughery has picked up awards for his talents on the pitch, but now his work behind a camera has earned him his latest accolade, writes Sheena Jackson.

The former Irish league footballer and referee was honoured on a national stage at the Camogie Association and Mick Dunne Memorial Awards at the weekend.

Dessie picked up the “Photograph of the Year”accolade at the awards held in GAA headquarters in Croke Park, which he attended with his wife Annemarie.

In recent years, the former Ballymena and Coleraine player has been taking photos as a hobby more than anything else.

“I’ve received awards for GAA and football, but this is the first time I have received anything for my photographs, so I’m delighted. It’s definitely a wee boost,” said Dessie.

The Roe Valley man said the winning photo was chosen for the intensity shown by the players in the shot.

“It’s great that a local person was recognised and when you see how many people from throughout Ireland were in the running, I’m delighted,” added Dessie.
