Southway resurfacing project welcomed

The confirmation comes after Sinn Féin representatives met with Transport NI officials in the city.

Colr. Campbell said: “I have raised this issue with Transport NI on a number of occasions and had been told that they had it on their priority list. I called on Transport NI to put this road to the top of the priority list so as when the money became available this much needed and overdue work can be carried out straight away.”

He added: “I have been getting constant complaints from residents living in the area about the state of the road. The Creggan estate has a population of around 12,000 and has only three main arterial routes into the estate and Southway being one of them is in a very bad state.

“A number of years ago there was a constant stream of heavy vehicles travelling that route during the building of Magowan Park. However that housing project has been completed over a year ago and Transport NI has only patched the problem up.”

SDLP Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan meanwhile last week vowed to write to Transport Minister Chris Hazzard over safety issues along Lone Moor Road, including road markings at the junction with Southway.

A Department of Infrastructure spokesperson said: “Transport NI can confirm that the junction markings at Lone Moor Road/ Southway will be redone as part of a resurfacing scheme planned for Southway. It is hoped that the works will commence in December with resurfacing being carried out and remarking of the Southway/ Lone Moor Road junction in January.”
