GCSE students at St. Mary's, Limavady, achieved 'the best set of results in the school's history', according to principal Mary McCloskey.

Mrs. McCloskey said the results were the culmination of “incredibly hard work from both Year 12 students and our teaching staff”.

Pupils achieved 79% A*-C grades, said Mrs. McCloskey; an increase of 10% on last year’s results, including English and Maths pupils have achieved 45%ounty, again another rise from last year.

“There has been a significant increase in the proportion of A* and A grades achieved across a range of subject areas, and the school is delighted with the progress outcomes achieved by students especially in English and Mathematics,” she said. “There were some outstanding individual performances. Particular mention should go to Sean Cross who achieved the top results at GCSE with 5 A*, 4 A and 1 B grade and will be returning to St. Mary’s to continue his studies at A Level. Again, as with the A Level results St. Mary’s has bucked the trend of girls out performing boys achieving the top results.”

Other top performances included Cody O’Doherty with 8A and 2 B grades, Ben Rice with 2 A, 4 B and 4 C grades, Bryan Case 1 A*, 5 A, 3 B and 1 C grades, Niamh McIlroy with 8 A and 2 B grades, Claire McFeely with 4 A, 3 B and 1 C grades and John McCloskey with 1 A*, 3 A and 6 B grades.”

Mrs. McCloskey said the school was also delighted with the performance of students who take vocational courses such as Health & Beauty and Construction and “have achieved excellent grades across all their subject areas”.

“We are delighted that the majority of pupils will be returning for further studies in St. Mary’s, and will follow on from the successes of our A Level results last week,” she said, adding: “All too often non selective schools are seen as second choice for a quality education however, our pupils year on year, prove that can pupils in the non-selective sector can achieve results as good as other educational sectors.”
