Street light backlog a '˜major problem'

Colr. Campbell said he made the discovery after making several enquiries regarding broken street lights in Creggan to TransportNI.

“A number of residents from Iniscarn Road in Creggan have complained that there are a number of street lights out and the street is very dark.

“I have spoken to Transport NI and reported the incident, however, there is a back log of more than 400 lights out in the city and this is causing a major problem,” added Colr. Campbell.

“During my discussions with TransportNI, I emphasised the point that Iniscarn Road has a large pensioner population and this is causing difficulty for them.”

Helen Cooper lives close to Iniscarn Crescent. The street light outside Mrs. Cooper’s home has been broken for several weeks.

“I know broken street lights might not be the biggest problem to some people but if you’re old and you live on your own, like I do, then it makes a huge difference,” she said.

“I don’t usually go out at night but I like to be able to see who is outside and who is going up and down the street.

“I pay my rates like everyone else in this city so I don’t think it’s a lot to ask to have working street lights,” said Mrs. Cooper.

Colr. Campbell urged anyone with a similar problem to contact him directly.
