19 road accidents as Derry and Strabane hit by heavy snow and ice

Nineteen road accidents were recorded in Derry and Strabane from 5pm on Monday as the city and district was hit by heavy snowfall and ice.

The PSNI urged people to take care on the roads throughout Tuesday.

“We've had 19 reported road traffic collisions in Derry City and Strabane since 5pm yesterday evening through to this morning, Tuesday, January 17. These have occurred in areas across the city, Strabane, Slaughtmanus and Donemana.

“If you are driving, please slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you,” police said.

The PSNI said the road accidents were as a result of the ‘treacherous weather conditions’.

Police stated: “Please only venture onto the roads if absolutely necessary, take extra care when driving, expect delays and drive according to the conditions of the road.

“We appreciate your understanding and patience as we respond to all calls and attempt to clear the roads.”
