Call for Malin Head plan as traffic issues persist

Substantial traffic issues at Banba’s Crown in Malin Head in recent weeks have led to increased calls for the Visitor Management Plan to be expedited.

The recent spell of good weather, coupled with the traditional holiday period, has seen tourists flock to the location. While there is a car park near the tower, it could not accommodate the number of visitors, with traffic chaos ensuing.

Failte Ireland and Donegal County Council are working with the local community, key agencies, business partners and stakeholders to deliver a Visitor Management Plan for Malin Head. This plan include removing parking at the head at Banba’s Crown and a one-way traffic route.

Donegal County Councillor Martin McDermott said that, as Failte Ireland and the Irish Government are encouraging people to holiday in Ireland, and in light of the traffic problems, the plan must be put in place sooner rather than later.

“Donegal is one of the counties people are now visiting who have never been here before. We have a great opportunity to build on this.

“Malin Head is key to whatever we do in tourism in Inishowen, with opportunities for the rest of the peninsula coming from that. Whatever stumbling blocks there are with the plan need to be got over. In September, when the council returns, I’ll be pushing it and trying to get a meeting with the consultants to get it to part eight planning. Visitors are loving the area, but we don’t want them to tell others there’s no point going as you can’t get parked.”

The Journal contacted Donegal County Council and Failte Ireland but there was no response at the time of going to Press.
