Europe's lead Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier has tested positive for COVID-19.

He confirmed: "I would like to inform you that I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am doing well and in good spirits. I am following all the necessary instructions, as is my team. For all those affected already, and for all those currently in isolation, we will get through this together."

The 69-year-old Frenchman served as the European Commission's chief negotiator with the United Kingdom over leaving the European Union, under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union.

He is now head of the European Union's UK Taskforce.
