Coronavirus: NISRA reports 599 registered COVID-19 deaths; 294 in hospital, 269 in care homes, 31 at home addresses, five in hospices

Just under 600 people had died from COVID-19 in the north up until the end of last week, according to the latest weekly bulletin from the Northern Ireland Research and Statistics Agency (NISRA).

In total 599 people had died after contracting the SARS-CoV-2 virus up until May 8. Seventy-seven of these deaths occurred in the week ending May 8.

The percentage of COVID-19 deaths in care homes in the north was 44.9 per cent with 269 deaths in total.

Thursday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 22 saw the greatest number of COVID-19 deaths (25) occurring in a single day.

The NISRA bulletin states: "Of the 599 total deaths involving COVID-19 occurring up to May 8, 294 (49.1%) occurred in hospital, 269 (44.9%) occurred in care homes, five (0.8%) occurred in hospices and 31 (5.2%) occurred at residential addresses or another location.

"The 274 deaths in care homes and hospices involved 71 separate establishments. In the week ending May 8, 36 (46.8%) of the 77 COVID-19 related deaths were in care homes, down from 60.5% in the week ending May 1."
