Derry councillor Patricia Logue calls for better access around Bishop Street

Calls have been made for the improvement of pedestrian access at a heavily utilised car park in Derry city centre.

Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue made a number of proposals to Derry City and Strabane District Council for the improvement of “visual and pedestrian permeability” in and around the busy Bishop Street car park.

The proposals include the removal of some perimeter structures and new access points.

Speaking to the ‘Journal’ Colr. Patricia Logue said: “I made a proposal to the council this week to improve visual and pedestrian permeability of the car park, improving its use as a public facility while enhancing its impact upon surroundings within the Historic City Conservation Area.

“It includes the city walls and surrounding listed buildings.

“I also made proposals that interventions include the removal of inappropriate and unsightly boundary structures on Bishop Street and Stable Lane along with the car park boundaries adjacent to the Freemason’s Hall and St. Augustine’s Parochial Hall.

“There needs to be improvement of pedestrian access with a new ramp leading to Palace Street and additional access points from Bishop Street and Stable Lane.”

Colr. Logue said new camera coverage was also to be installed.

“And finally one additional CCTV camera mounted on a 6m high pole is to be erected within the car park area,” she said.
