Derry girls will wear the trousers as St. Cecilia's students vote overwhelming for new uniform option

Girls attending St. Cecilia's College in Derry will have the option of wearing trousers for the first time next year after students voted overwhelmingly in favour of the move.

School Principal Martine Mulhern said both senior management and the Board of Governors agreed to introduce trousers as a uniform option after the school's Student Council asked for the choice to be made available.

"Well over 90 per cent voted and 87.4 per cent of our students felt that they should have the option that they can wear trousers," said Mrs. Mulhern.

"You can't say that you have Student Council and listen to your pupils and then ignore what they tell you," she added.

The St. Cecilia's Principal took the results of the plebiscite to her Board of Governors who gave took the same view and rubber-stamped the move.

The new uniform option has not been officially launched yet but Mrs. Mulhern believes people will be impressed when they see it.

"We've done a wee bit of work on the blazer just to brighten it a wee bit so that when it goes with the trousers it's very fashionable and sophisticated looking. It is very sophisticated looking. It's gorgeous. So we're chuffed with it," she said.
