Lengthy queues as Derry recycling centres reopen for first time in seven weeks

Derry City and Strabane District Council's recycling centres were extremely busy when they reopened for the first time in seven weeks with lengthy queues reported first thing on Monday at the Pennyburn depot.

The Council's Waste Services Manager Nicola McCool urged people only to attend the Pennyburn, Strathfoyle, Glendermott Road, Claudy and Strabane centres if absolutely necessary.

"Please only make the journey if it is essential. If you have large items please avail of our free bulky waste service," she said.

First thing on Monday the Council reported a surge in demand as five of its waste facilities opened for the first time in seven weeks.

Demand was especially high as its facilities at Eglinton, Park, Donemana, Plumbridge, Killeen and Newtownstewart remain closed.

A Council spokesperson said: "We are experiencing high volumes of traffic at all of our recycling centres this morning. Lengthy queues are in place. Please put your journey off until later this evening or later in the week. Sites open 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. daily We appreciate your patience."

While queues to enter the centres had lessened by mid-morning they were still very busy.

Ms. McCool urged people to be patient and courteous with Council staff and one another when attending.

"There will be a queuing system in place so please by patient and please remember to maintain social distancing at all times.

"Our staff will also be under pressure so please be respectful. We are all in this together," she said.

The Council said restrictions and controls will be in place at recycling centres to help people stay safe

A spokesperson said: "Social distancing is required and the public will be asked to dispose of their own waste

"One way queuing systems will be in operation with one person allowed to enter the skip at a time

"Please use our bulky waste collection service to dispose of large items rather than attending centres at this time. Book online at www.derrystrabane.com/service/wasterecycling/bulkywaste

"Large vans, trailers or commercial waste will not be accepted

"People who are self-isolating or experiencing COVID-19 symptoms must not enter recycling centres

"Please do not visit your local recycling centre unless your journey is absolutely essential

"Abusive behaviour to staff will not be tolerated."
