Just after 9.10am this morning, HM Coastguard received information from Irish Coastguard that a large tanker vessel had run aground close to the mouth of Lough Foyle.

Contact was established with the master of the vessel - the Thun Liffey - and no damage to the vessel or pollution was reported.

The Maritime & Coastguard Agency’s Counter Pollution branch were made aware of the incident and supported HM Coastguard’s response.

Tugs were sent to the vessel and the vessel was monitored until it was able to be re-floated. The tugs Strathfoyle and Shrove attended the scene and helped re-float the boat. It was later anchored off the coast of Moville.

A spokesperson for Foyle Port told the ‘Journal’ they had responded to the request from the ship’s captain for assistance and tugs were dispatched from the port. Port officials were at the location and monitored the situation.
