Pensioner from Derry and Strabane tragically dies from COVID-19

A woman from the Derry and Strabane area has tragically died from coronavirus, the Department of Health data published this afternoon shows.

It's the first COVID-19 death locally since July.

The Department of Health figures show the woman died in hospital on October 7.

It takes to 22 the total number of COVID-19 deaths in Derry and Strabane since the pandemic began, according to the Department's criteria.

The NISRA figure is higher and will rise to 30 when its weekly bulletin is released on Friday.

Over a thousand people have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past week in Derry and Strabane and 32 people were being treated in Western Trust hospitals for the illness at midnight.

The latest data from the Department of Health show that 1,062 people tested positive for coronavirus between October 1 and October 7 taking the seven day rate per 100,000 up to 704.9.
